Flag History & Etiquette

The Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter has given numerous presentations on the history of the American Flag and its proper handling and display. The topics covered include:

    • History of the National Colors and battle flags in our Color Guard
    • History of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner and its meaning
    • History of the Pledge of Allegiance
    • Flag folding ceremony
    • Instruction in the proper folding of the American Flag
    • Instruction in the proper display of the American Flag

Donations to Veterans Hospitals

Donations to Veterans Hospitals

Since 2012, the members of our chapter have delivered between 113,000 and 130,000 donation items each year to Veterans Affairs Hospitals in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The types of donation items we collect include:

    • Reading material (books & magazines)
    • Movies (VHS & DVD) & audio tapes/CDs
    • Personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant, etc.)
    • Comfort items (snack items, tea, coffee, hot cocoa, juice boxes, etc.)
    • Clothing

This chapter offers presentations to schools on a wide variety of topics related to the colonial period and early history of our nation. Past presentations have been given on:

The Governor Isaac Shelby Chapter takes part in the activities of various youth organizations and supports entrants in the various contests sponsored by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution.

Color Guard for Events and Parades

Color Guard

Our color guard consists of members outfitted with a mixture of Revolutionary War era uniforms. Some members wear the red and blue uniforms like those worn by the First Virginia Continental soldiers and some wear an assortment of militia or minuteman uniforms, like those possibly worn by their ancestors. We carry thirteen flags, and depending on the event, flintlock firearms.

Historic Events

Our chapter participates in several historic events throughout the year. The types of events we are invited to support are anniversaries/commemorations of historic events, dedication ceremonies and marking services for historic structures and locations, and ceremonies to commemorate individuals who played a role in our history. The services we can provide for a historic event include:

    • Color Guard
    • Flintlock rifle salute and Taps
    • Wreath presentation
    • Presentation of historic American flags
    • Replicas of items from colonial America
    • Interpreters in colonial America clothing
    • Demonstrations on weaponry from colonial America
    • Demonstrations on music from colonial America
